Castiel

Sometimes a name carries a story. And sometimes that story becomes the inspiration for a song. “Castiel” is a song I wrote for my 13-year-old grandson, who was named after the angel Castiel from the television series Supernatural.

If you've watched the show, you probably remember Castiel as an angel who became one of its most beloved characters. What I always found fascinating about him was the way he came to understand humanity. Here was this incredibly powerful angel who developed such a genuine affection for the people around him. He was loyal, protective, sometimes wonderfully curious, and deeply compassionate. And as his story unfolded, you couldn't help but appreciate how much he valued friendship, kindness, and doing what he believed was right.

Now, my grandson Castiel is growing up with that same remarkable name, and I see some wonderful similarities. He's a thoughtful, soft-spoken young man with gentle brown eyes and a curiosity about the world that I find fascinating. He's someone who listens, observes, and thinks about things. You can almost see the questions forming behind those eyes as he tries to make sense of everything around him.

There's a line in the song that says, “There's a universe behind those eyes.” I particularly love that line because it captures something I've often thought about when looking at my grandson. At thirteen, there's so much of life still ahead of him. So many things to discover, so many people to meet, so many dreams he hasn't even dreamed yet. It's exciting to imagine where his curiosity and imagination might take him.

When it came time to create the music, I knew I didn't want a soft, sentimental ballad. I wanted something with energy, strength, and a little mystery. Something that would reflect both the extraordinary character who inspired his name and the young man who's growing into it. So we went with a powerful alternative rock sound, complete with driving guitars, strong drums, mysterious synthesizer textures, and a chorus that really opens up. The arrangement continues building until a dramatic finale and key change that gives the whole song an uplifting finish.

But underneath all that musical energy, there's something very personal. This is a grandfather looking at his grandson and wondering about the life ahead of him. I don't know what Castiel will become or where his interests will eventually lead him. That's part of the wonderful mystery of watching a young person grow up. What I do know is that I hope he'll always keep asking questions, exploring new ideas, and discovering the things that bring meaning and happiness to his life.

As I was finishing the song, I found myself thinking less about the angel and more about the blessing I wanted to leave for my grandson. I wanted him to know that he doesn't have to accomplish something extraordinary to make a difference. Sometimes the greatest things we bring into this world are the kindness we show, the people we love, and the ways we make life a little better for someone else.

That's really what the final words of the song are all about:

“May the world be better for your life, And your light shine far beyond your time.”

I can't think of a better wish for my grandson, or for any young person beginning to discover who they are and what they might become.

So, Castiel, this one's for you. Keep searching, keep dreaming, and enjoy the adventure ahead. You've got a whole universe waiting to be discovered.

With love, from Grandpa. - Hadley Price
