Young Dolly sang on Locust Ridge
Beneath that Tennessee sky
Twelve kids in a mountain home
Smoky Mountains rising high
Her mama filled their home with music
Her daddy worked the land
They made their way with little
In those hills of Cumberland
She came down from that mountain
With a dream she had to chase
She left behind old Locust Ridge
But never left that place
From Locust Ridge to Nashville
That mountain voice took wing
A coat of many colors
And a thousand songs to sing
She gave the world her laughter
A voice that set hearts free
And every road that carried her
Wound through Tennessee
She brought the dream back home again
To the hills that raised her right
Put books into those little hands
And helped young dreams take flight
She never hid the mountain girl
Beneath the hair and rhinestone shine
The bigger that the whole world got
The more she called those mountains mine
From Locust Ridge to Nashville
That mountain voice took wing
A coat of many colors
And a thousand songs to sing
She gave the world her laughter
A voice that set hearts free
And every road that carried her
Wound through Tennessee
She met her Carl in Nashville
And loved him all those years
While all the world was calling
He was waiting somewhere near
Through every road that took her far
Through every song she’d sing
There was still a life back home
Beyond lights and Tennessee
Now somewhere in those Tennessee hills
The morning breaks the same
The mist still settles on the ridge
That knew her before fame
And every song she left behind
Still rises through those trees
Like one more voice from Locust Ridge
Riding on mountain breeze
From Locust Ridge to Nashville
And everywhere between
She showed how far a mountain girl
Could carry one small dream
She gave the world her laughter
A voice that set hearts free
And every song she left behind
Still winds through Tennessee
She left behind old Locust Ridge
But Locust Ridge set her free
