Up on a butte where the junipers grew,
Mountains smiled in a sky so blue.
Black Butte stood like an old best friend,
That’s where our story would begin.
She’d hop up in that old blue truck,
We’d head on out and test our luck.
Deschutes calling, worms in the can,
Just a dad, with his little right hand.
If I could drive that road again,
I’d take it nice and slow.
I’d watch you name those little bats Out where the evening glows.
Life wasn’t always easy,
We both know that is true.
But the best part of those mountain days
Was sharing them with you.
We’d follow trails where few would go,
Castin’ lines where cold streams flowed.
Waterfalls around each bend,
Hopin’ that day would never end.
One summer day, ’round a mountain bend,
A giant snake crossed right in.
We just watched till it slipped from view,
Another day for me and you.
Years have passed like rivers run,
Some were shadow, some were sun.
I’d change a few things if I could do,
But I’d never change one day with you.
If I could drive that road again,
I’d take it nice and slow.
I’d watch you name those little bats
Out where the evening glows.
Life wasn’t always easy,
We both know that is true.
But the best part of those mountain days
Was sharing them with you.
